Thousands of people are expected to march during a parade Saturday in Winston-Salem in support of the lesbian, gay and transgender community. In addition, a special conference this weekend will promote interaction and understanding between members of the LGBTQ and straight communities.

The “Come Out of the Wilderness” Conference will be held this Friday and Saturday at Green Street United Methodist Church. WFDD's Keri Brown spoke with Rev. Kelly Carpenter about the upcoming conference.

Rev. Kelly Carpenter says Green Street United Methodist Church also will display several Liturgical Stoles from the Shower of Stoles Project in the sanctuary during the conference. A Liturgical Stole is the story-scarf that ministers and priests wear draped around their shoulders on top of their robes. Each stole tells a story of a person from the LGBTQ community who has been rejected for ordination.

This weekend's conference is a collaboration between Interfaith Voice, The Reconciling Ministries and Green Street United Methodist Church.
