Triad Arts Live With The Tyler Nail Trio And David Payne's New Memoir "Barefoot To Avalon"

Last week the Triad Arts team left the cozy confines of our studio and headed over to Hanesbrands Theatre.

In collaboration with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, WFDD held a Triad Arts Live lunchtime event. Our guests were The Tyler Nail Trio and Triad listeners.

Led by singer songwriter Tyler Nail, the band performed a live concert that we play in today's show. The trio is rounded off by Johnathan Loos on guitar and Quique Rodriguez-Pastor on bass. The group talked about songwriting, music videos, inspirations, and an artistic venture happening this Friday at The Garage in downtown Winston-Salem.

David Payne and Readings on Roslyn

New York Times notable writer David Payne is known for books such as Confessions of a Taoist on Wallstreet, and Back to Wando Passo. He has a new memoir out. Barefoot to Avalon: A Brother's Story looks at the life and tragic death of David Payne's younger brother, George A. The book is about brotherhood, grief, and mental illness.

Ron Rash says, "Barefoot to Avalon is clear-eyed and unsentimental, which makes it all the more powerful and, ultimately, unforgettable." 

Payne's writing is so captivating that his reader becomes aware of the many years, events, memories, and realizations that Payne has traversed, only when he brings them back to a familiar starting point - a room at the family's beach house where the two brothers share the Piedmont blues for example.

In Payne's book, memories from the boys' adolescence become guiding metaphors.  A memorable footrace highlights the difference between pacing and racing, who's in the lead, who wins…

David Payne spoke to Bethany from his home Hillsborough, and they began by discussing the race to Avalon.

Payne will be the highlighted writer at Readings on Roslyn on Monday, August 10^th. The series brings writers and readers together for an evening of fellowship and enlightenment. The event begins at 7pm at the Porter B. Byrum Center at Wake Forest University. It is free and open to the public.
