The Sawtooth School for Visual Art has been leading the way in the Piedmont Triad for nearly 70 years, providing art classes for all ages taught by award-winning teachers and participating artists in ceramics, drawing and painting, glass, metals and much more. Registration for Sawtooth's Fall semester is well underway. Classes begin September 16th.
One of the school's talented teacher/artists is Master bowyer Dane Snodgrass. Some of the oldest primitive weapons discovered have been Neolithic wooden bows. A selfbow is made from a single piece of wood without lamination, and during Dane's 8-week course at Sawtooth—Monday nights, 6:30-9:00 pm from September 16th through November 4th—Dane will introduce the hand tools and techniques needed to craft just such an historic weapon. After years away, Dane has returned full circle on his journey as a bowyer, a journey that began making bows from sticks as a youngster. He spoke to David Ford.
