Carolina Summer Music Festival Celebrates "Things Wondrous and Humble"

The new exhibit Things Wondrous & Humble: American Still Life at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art features some of the finest examples of still life—both traditional and some unexpected approaches—from collections all across North Carolina. Coming up on Sunday, August 18th at 3 p.m. in the Babcock Wing of Reynolda House, the Carolina Summer Music Festival presents A Bouquet of Music—a chamber recital featuring music inspired by nature and flowers. On the program of 7 nature-inspired works, mezzo-soprano Janine Hawley will be joined by pianist Robert Roco in a performance of "My Master hath a Garden" by Richard Hundley. We sample from their performance in today's show. 

In addition, pianist Ivan Seng will perform "Wildflowers" by acclaimed North Carolina composer Kenneth Frazelle. Ken spoke with David Ford about the piece, but first Reynolda House Director of Public Programs Phil Archer, placed this bouquet of music into context. 

Ken's compositions have included commissions from such renowned performers as Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, and Paula Robison to name a few. Also on the Bouquet of Music program: Insect pieces for oboe and piano by Benjamin Britten, My Master Hath a Garden for mezzo and piano by American composer Richard Hundley, and much more. It's all music inspired by Reynolda's latest exhibition: Things Wondrous & Humble: American Still Life. David Ford will be moderating a post-concert Question and Answer session with Ken which will be followed by a reception.
