Since its beginnings 8 years ago, Yes! Weekly magazine has become a vital part of the Triad media scene, with breaking news stories and comprehensive cultural writing that has won both statewide and regional awards. Ryan Snyder is the music writer at Greensboro-based YES! Weekly. He's worked in all facets of media from radio/TV to print journalism to public relations. In addition to his work with Yes! Weekly, he's a copywriter and editor for a large Greensboro Internet marketing company.
Ryan recently spoke with WFDD Radio Camper Larry McBride about his career.
----------------------------------------------------
I sat with Ryan in the Community Center of the cultural arts center in Greensboro. I wondered how he got his start with Yes! Weekly.
...He got back to me about a week later, sent out a mass email to a lot of people saying “This is a cattle call- we need a new music writer. Go out an review a show, write 1000 words and take a photo." I went to the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro with the rapper Redman and a soul group called Connie Price and the Keystones and sent in my review, and after a short interview, they gave me the job. That was September 2008, so it's going on five years now.
I asked Ryan about his writing. He described his style.
I feel very passionate about what I'm writing about, and sometimes it seems like I might be highly in favor of something… I bring an approach to my writing that gives people a clear understanding of what is happening in the local music scene. It's not as comprehensive as I would like because there is so much happening and I'm just one person, but I feel that the topics I settle on are, more often than not, the most pressing at that particular time.
To read some of Ryan Snyder's work, grab a YES! Weekly newspaper.
For WFDD Radio Camp, I'm Larry McBride.
