Comic books continue to be popular across the country. Comic-con in San Diego, presents conventions and events celebrating the ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. The number of new summer block busters based on comic book characters is growing each year, and that enthusiasm for comics is alive and well here in the Triad.
Radio camper Nikki Brooks recently met with Greensboro's Stephen Mayers. He's the comic writer and manager of Acme comics.
----------------------------------------------------
He approached me with a smile on his face and wearing a New York Yankees hat. He's passionate about making his living off of comic books. We sat down and I started to ask him why he wanted to write comics.
One day I was reading a comic book that a friend of mine makes, actually. I had an idea for a story and so I just called him and said “Hey, I have this idea and I think it would really work for you characters and for one of my characters and we could put them both together and he was interested in doing it. It's kind of my way of giving back. I've read thousands and thousands of comics. Being able to write one and have other people read and enjoy it is my way to give back.
He also mentioned how he loved comics at an early age. We soon got deeper in the conversation. I had so many questions for him! But I then asked him if he had any advice for people starting out at writing comics...
Just write exactly what you want. One of the great things about comics is that there is no budget. You don't really have to answer to anybody, especially not at first.
This fall Stephens first comics work as a writer will come out in Aw Yeah Comics, So be on the look out for it!
For WFDD radio camp I'm Nikki Brooks.
