UNCSA Students Travel to Haiti
Jonathan Milner teaches AP US Government, Civics and Economics to high school students at the University of NC School of the Arts. Jonathan has been named the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Teacher of the Year, and over the past two decades he's brought a remarkable level of energy and commitment to the classroom. But it's the work that goes on outside of the classroom that may be the most remarkable. In 2005 Jonathan founded Global Arts Project, an educational exchange program to expand his student's horizons and bring them together with other students in the US, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
The next Global Arts Project will find Jonathan and 20 of his students in Port-au-Prince, Haiti this summer where they will work with and learn from the students at the Zanmi Beni orphanage building instruments, performing music together, and sharing songs. The Haiti Project concert is a free event with student music, dance, drama, visual art and a bucket brigade performance. It'll be tonight at 7:30 pm in Crawford Hall on the UNCSA campus. Donations at the performance event will be accepted for the Haiti Project to help get the students to Port-au-Prince. Jonathan spoke with David Ford about the project, and he was joined in the studio by Senior UNCSA violist Sean Mulligan and rising Junior French hornist Meredith Bain. They'll both be performing at tonight's fundraising concert and we'll sample from those performances throughout this story.

John Newman Garden Design
Early spring is still in the air, and for acclaimed garden designer John Newman that means Cornus, Hamamelis , and Thymelaeaceae…that is: dazzling dogwoods, wonderful witch-hazel, and exciting edgeworthia.
You can see the fruits of John's labors at the height of their spring season glory at theCentral YMCA and Augsburg Luthern Church in Winston-Salem. John and his team of eight co-creators at John Newman Garden Design share a fascination with architecture, Japanese gardens and design, and for the past 20 years they've been artfully marrying all of these elements focusing primarily on residential garden design including water features, pathways, and beautiful stone mosaics. Music included in today's interview is Peace Like A River arr. Mack Wilberg sung by the Centenary Choir and orchestra conducted by David Pegg.

Camerata Romeu
The award-winning, internationally acclaimed Cuban string orchestra Camerata Romeu live in concert brings an amazing collection of Cuban and Latin American chamber music performed from memory by a group of dynamic women musicians. Their extraordinary music-making, energy, and spontaneous interactions in performance have been bringing audiences young and old to their feet for 20 years under the baton of conductor Zenaida Romeu. The first woman from her country to graduate with a degree in orchestral direction, Zenaida represents the third generation of a family of notable Cuban musicians. Last month Zenaida was on the campus of Wake Forest where she gave a talk “My Life in Cuba: The Camerata Romeu and Latin American Music”, and she also led the WFU Choir in a concert at Brendle Recital Hall. This week she brings her incredible artistic abilities and pedagogic skills to the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony Orchestra for a series of rehearsals concluding in a concert on Monday night, May 13 at 7:30 pm in the Stevens Center.
