Reynolda House and "Star Power: Edward Steichen"
Experiencing "Star Power: Edward Steichen's Glamour Photograhpy" is among the top 5 things all North Carolinians should do this month according to Our State Magazine.
It's being called the top fashion exhibition this season by Lucky Magazine, and maybe most telling of all, the granddaughter of the man whose photography is being honored, calls it the most creative installation of his work that she's ever seen. Star Power: Edward Steichen's Glamour Photography is on view through May 19 at Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem. Star Power explores the Golden Age of Hollywood in the late 20s through the 30s with Steichen's images of luminaries like Catherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, and Gloria Swanson. The exhibit is unique in that it also ties together Hollywood's Golden Age with the Golden Age of Reynolda. Alongside the portraits by America's first modern fashion photographer, viewers can look at the amazing gowns, shoes and art deco jewelry that the Reynolds family were wearing during the same time period. Reynolda House curator Alison Slaby met David Ford at the museum to explain this “cross-dressing” of art & couture.
First in Flight is an entertainment company that's in the process of opening their own theatre entertainment complex: black box theatre, scene shop, and eventually an event center and main stage theatre. First in Flight Entertainment Theatre Company is their non-profit organization now in its second exciting year. Next week FIFE Theatre will present a wonderful musical that the whole family can enjoy: Into the Woods, Jr. It will run Friday, March 22nd and Saturday the 23rd at 7:00pm with a Saturday matinee at 2pm at Southwest Elementary Auditorium. First in Flight Director Erinn Diaz (who also stars as one of the Andrews sisters in First in Flight's Letters From Home) stopped by WFDD along with 11-year-old actor Anna Kummer who plays granny, 13-year-old actors Sophie Davis who narrates the show and Peter Villasmil who plays the wolf.
The UNC School of the Arts just wrapped up a successful Winter dance performance that was highlighted by one of the most challenging choreographies in modern dance: D-Man in the Waters by Bill T. Jones. Next up it's Spring Dance which opens this year on April 20 with Shen Wei's Rite of Spring, Nijinsky's Jeux and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and a world premiere ballet by School of Dance Dean Susan Jaffe, set to Borodin's Polovtsian Dances. In setting her new choreography Susan will no doubt be calling on her decades of professional dance experience. She was the principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre for 20 years. She stopped by in December to talk Nutcracker and to answer a few questions David had about her remarkable career.
Later this month the SECREST performance series at Wake Forest University will present the highly acclaimed violin, clarinet, and piano trio Strata in the world premiere of Ken's new work titled “A Book of Days”. It's based on passages from one of Wake Forest University's most famous alumni, poet and author A. R. Ammons. The performance is Thursday night, March 21 at 7:30pm in Brendle Recital Hall on the Wake campus. Ken dropped by WFDD to talk about the new work, the ensemble Strata (violinist/violist James Stern, clarinetist Nathan Williams and pianist Audrey Andrist), and his first chance meeting with a poem by A.R. Ammons more than 30 years ago.
