"Sunset Edge" Filmmaker Daniel Peddle, Kim Thore, Mason Wood, John Purifoy, Triad To Do

Sunset Edge

Sunset Edge is a film that paints the South in a familiar yet eerie light. It was shot entirely in Central and Western North Carolina with a local cast, hand picked from West Forsyth high school and the Dixie Classic Fair. The film is a tribute to the mysteries of youth and the transformative state of rural communities. At times Sunset Edge has the feeling of a horror film, but instead of jump scares you're treated to sumptuous vistas and stark shots of abandon and decay.

On Sunday August 2nd a/perture cinema is hosting a one-time screening of Sunset Edge. Director, writer, and producer, Daniel Peddle will be in attendance. His first two films The Aggressives and Trail Angels were documentaries, and he brings those cinéma vérité sensibilities to Sunset Edge. Daniel currently runs a casting company in New York City where he's known as a skilled “street scout” for the modeling industry. But his roots run down the eastern seaboard and right into North Carolina.

Kim Thore

Kim Thore became an artist at an early age (eight, to be exact). She has trained in everything from watercolor to drawing, pastels and sculpture. In her 30's, she took a break from producing art, but found ways to engage her creative energy in a more corporate realm, through design, marketing, and public relations. 

In 2014 her home flooded and Thore lost her entire portfolio. Though discouraged, Thore's need to create didn't disappear. It was then that she discovered digital art.

Thore is teaching a class in digital art at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art where you can learn a variety of digital design and collage techniques. Participants will engage with digital programs including Adobe Photoshop, Pixlr, FotoFlexer, and PicMonkey. The class runs July 27th to the 29th. You can also see Thore's work at Inter_Section Gallery beginning on August 7th at the gallery hop in Winston-Salem. The show will be on display through September.

Awadagin Pratt

International soloist Awadagin Pratt received diplomas in piano, violin and conducting at the Peabody Conservatory. He'll bring two of those skills to bear on Saturday night, August 1^st,during the Eastern Music Festival Finale concert with the Eastern Festival Orchestra. Awadagin will conclude his five week residency there with a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1, which he'll conduct himself from the piano bench…

Mason Wood & John Purifoy

Ever wonder where that piece of you music you heard sung in church came from? It may very well have been delivered courtesy of J.W. Pepper Music. Last weekend they assembled some of the best new sacred choral music—some 66 new titles—along with local directors and choristers to share and sing through the works. Conducting the group were celebrated choral composers and clinicians Terre Johnson and John Purifoy. John, whose work we're sampling, spoke with me by phone from his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. He's joined in the studio by J.W. Pepper & Son of Winston-Salem Manager Mason Wood. J.W. puts on hundreds of events like these all across the United States, and each year between 18-22,000 new titles are added to their distribution system.
