Anne Murray is a Winston-Salem-based artist who creates books from raw materials. From making the paper that fills her books, to crafting covers of paper, cloth, and wood to finally sewing the components together through ancient stitches, Anne has a hand in every step of the process.
Her fascination with the art began with a book itself. While engaging in a midlife exploration, Anne entered the library and found in front of her, the Penland Book of Handmade Books. She checked it out, and hours later when she closed her new read, Murray knew she wanted to be a bookbinder. She's been pursuing the art ever since.
Anne is teaching a variety of workshops this summer including a Secret Belgian Binding Workshop and Book Repair Workshop. In August, she'll be co-teaching a Wood Book Covers and Bookbinding Class at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art. Anne's advice to those with a black page or black book in front of them: write on it immediately.
Murray's career as an educator took her to Romania on a teaching Fulbright. Today Anne tells of the collaboration in bookmaking that opened doors.
