Talk about ending sales of a North Carolina license plate bearing the Confederate battle flag prompted a sales rush throughout the state. The available stock is currently sold out.
It's only been eight days since Gov. Pat McCrory said North Carolina should stop issuing the specialty plates. But in that time, 152 Confederate flag plates have been sold, according to the News And Observer.
State Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Charbonneau says that's roughly the equivalent of nine months worth of orders. He says more plates will be available in about a month.
Efforts to remove the Confederate battle flag from public spaces followed the fatal church shooting of nine people in Charleston, S.C., last month.
McCrory said lawmakers needed to end the specialty plate, which is associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Lawmakers countered that the governor has the authority to act on his own.
