Novant Health may extend its presence in Virginia. The company would take over management of Culpeper Regional Hospital, a community facility owned by the University of Virginia Health System.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that Novant and Culpepper have signed non-binding letters of intent, and are in talks to form a joint operation by June 30.

Besides the Culpeper hospital, the joint operating company would include Novant's Haymarket and Prince William medical centers in Virginia, as well as a Novant cancer center in the area.

UVA acquired the Culpeper hospital in October. It has already made a $45 million commitment toward the facility that includes expanding its wellness center.

Discussions between Novant and UVA will include how they can coordinate cancer care across northern Virginia.

The Winston-Salem based Novant Health network operates nearly 500 facilities in North Carolina.
