American artist currently residing in Rome, Josephine Halvorson paints outdoors.
She typically finishes a canvas in a single session that may span an entire day. During her intense painting periods of post-industrial machines, architectural structures, or discarded objects, Josephine develops interesting associations with her subjects, and all while discovering new things about herself.
Her exhibition "Slow Burn", 23 paintings that relate to space and made over the last few years, is on display at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem. Curator Cora Fischer says Josephine's paintings connect the viewer's experiences, associations and futures in new and unexpected ways. The exhibit will remain on display at SECCA through May 31st.
David Ford spoke with artist Josephine Halvorson by phone from New York.
