Legislators learned Wednesday what Duke Energy has done to clean up its coal-ash problem. Duke Energy has turned in ash excavation plans for four sites where pits must be closed by 2019.

A Duke Energy executive and state regulators spoke Wednesday to a legislative commission about what's happened since legislation was approved last summer that requires ash dumps capped or removed by 2029.

Tom Reeder with the Division of Water Resources says his agency will soon ask hundreds of owners of drinking wells near the dumps whether they want their water sources tested.

Coal ash contains numerous heavy metals that can be dangerous in large amounts.
