North Carolina's first commercial winery was established in Halifax County back in 1835. Five years later, our state was leading the entire country in wine production.

The industry was crushed by Prohibition in 1909, and it wasn't until the 1950s that things began turning around.  By 2006 there were 13 wineries in Yadkin Valley alone. That's the year Brushy Mountain Winery opened in Elkin.

Today there are more than 40 Yadkin wineries. They're winning international awards and gaining the attention of winemakers around the world. That's music to the ears of Brushy Mountain owner, and App State graduate Jason Wiseman, music that he brings to his winery every month. He's joined by singer/songwriter Julian Charles of Bandit's Roost.

In today's show, we sample from their new CD Stone Circles. The winery's Songwriter Showcase is the 4th Thursday of the month, and this Sunday will be their first house concert, with Matt Bednarsky. Brushy Mountain's Chardonnays and Pinot Gris have won silver and gold medals at the Mid-Atlantic and Indy International Wine Competions. Its Booger Swamp White Wine was featured on the Jay Leno show, and in the Washington Post.
