There has been more controversy at the troubled International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro. One of the new board members resigned Monday night, shortly after his colleagues fired executive director Lacy Ward.  Greensboro's mayor has also spoken out against Ward's firing.

George Johnson spent just three months on the museum's new 15-member board. He resigned following Monday night's board meeting in which a majority of members voted to oust the executive director.

The News and Record of Greensboro reports Johnson refused to give his reasons for resigning.

Then a second new member, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan, broke ranks with fellow board members Tuesday by speaking out against Ward's firing.

Vaughan says she is worried about an erosion in public support, and warns that the museum cannot count on the city for any more financial assistance.

Last year, the City Council made a controversial decision to give the museum a $1.5 million forgivable loan.

Museum officials have not given a reason for Ward's termination.
