The Forsyth County Board of Elections wants to buy $1.5 million worth of new voting equipment. Now the county commissioners have to decide if they will fund the request.
Steve Hines, director of elections for Forsyth County, says his office is asking to replace all of its voting equipment. He doesn't want to have the same issues with vote-counting machines breaking down that occurred in the November elections. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, other members of the Board support the request, saying that the current equipment is about a decade old and outdated. County commissioners have not yet begun their budget deliberation process.
Assistant county manager Ronda Tatum says Forsyth County bought about $1.7 million in elections equipment in 2005-06 using federal dollars, which were funneled through the state. Josh Lawson, a spokesman for the N.C. State Board of Elections, says those dollars are no longer available for county equipment upgrades, and at present there is no state money for it.
