The Greensboro City Council unanimously voted Wednesday to oppose a controversial state Senate bill that changes the makeup of the council and the division of city districts. The council's message was that residents should be allowed to weigh in.
Senate Bill 36 proposes changes to the structure of the City Council, its district map and the powers of the mayor. It was filed earlier this month by Republican State Senator Trudy Wade.
The News and Record of Greensboro reports the council Wednesday voted unanimously to oppose the bill. They also agreed to hold a referendum on extending the terms of its members from two to four years — a part of the bill which they approve.
Tony Wilkins had been the bill's lone defender on the council, but surprised many by voting to oppose it Wednesday.
Wilkins says residents have a right to vote on any changes.
The council will hold a public hearing on the proposed changes at its March 3 meeting.
