Residents packed into Greensboro City Hall Thursday night to weigh in on a recent proposal to reconfigure the City Council. Only a handful of attendees supported the legislation.
More than 250 locals showed up at Thursday's public meeting of Guilford County legislative leaders.
The News and Record of Greensboro reports that most were there to protest Sen. Trudy Wade's bill that would redraw council districts and change the role of the mayor.
Only a few speakers — including former Mayor Bill Knight and former Councilman Bob Mays — were in favor of the legislation.
Senate Bill 36, filed last week, would reduce the size of the council, eliminate three at-large representatives, give the mayor veto powers and create seven new council districts.
The speakers' comments Thursday night seemed to focus on two issues — the reduction in council representatives and the lack of local input on the proposal.
Wade, a Republican, did not specifically address her bill or any other issue with the crowd, but said afterward she would take all of the comments under consideration.
