The nonprofit arts and education outreach organization Authoring Action is dedicated to developing young people as authors, artists, and advocates for social change.
Originally founded in 2002 as the Winston-Salem Youth Arts Institute, the program aims to redefine learning through the arts, and to help strengthen communities. On Saturday March 7th at 6pm, Authoring Action's 4th Annual Winter Retrospective opens. You can also catch the program on March 8th, 14th, and 15th. The event takes place at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary art, or SECCA.
The program will feature teen authors in a 75 minute show highlighting engagements from the past year, as well as their thoughts around issues of race and education. Other collaborating artists include Jennifer O'Kelly's audio and set design, and musician Paul Douse.
One of the mediums Authoring Action gives teens the opportunity to work in is film. Last year Authoring Action's Nathan Freeman came by with student Dionna Daniel to talk with David Ford about writing for moving pictures.
