Kami Rowan is classical guitarist and professor of music at Guilford College. She is also the faculty advisor for WQFS 90.9 FM, Guilford College's radio station. She just visited Northern Ireland to study music's role and how it affects Ireland's political scene. WFDD Radio Camper Emma Kilpatrick recently spoke with Kami to find out more.

Kami Rowan talks about the types of music she plays and what she feels when she plays it. She first starts with talking about the band she is in, then moves onto different music she plays.

Being in the rock band is just fun. I mean, it's just like going out and playing with your friends outside. It's just pure fun, enjoy, and excitement, and it's just something that I do that I don't worry about or think about too much. It's easy, it doesn't really challenge me that much. Then writing pieces, that's a solo thing, right? Playing in a band is like being on a team, a team sport, but when I'm writing, I'm by myself, so I'm more contemplative and it's more of an internal process.

I asked Kami about how working at Guilford College affects her music.

It creates, I guess, happy music, or it makes me want to play music in a positive way. Some artists might have hard times in their lives, angst, and negativity going on, and that could also create music. You could also express that through music, but I think the way that I'm most affected by being at Guilford is positive and inspirational.
