Historical Marker Touts Furniture Market

State officials unveiled a historic marker Monday that honors the importance of the state's furniture industry.

Governor Pat. McCrory was on hand for the unveiling. It took place outside of a Main Street building that opened in 1921 as the city's first major exposition building. Today, High Point has more than 11 million square feet of showroom space.

McCrory praised the market's historical impact but says the furniture manufacturing story in North Carolina is far from over.

While much of the manufacturing has left the area over the years, the twice-a-year furniture market remains a key to the industry. Last year, Duke University researchers determined that the furniture market has an impact of more than $5 billion on the Piedmont economy.
