NC Lawmakers 'Retreat' To Discuss Education Issues

North Carolina lawmakers are preparing for this year's session by attending an education boot camp at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro.

The annual Holshouser Legislators Retreat is hosted by the Hunt Institute and brings together teachers, administrators and education researchers to discuss the topic.

North Carolina spends an average of over $85,000 per student. That's 25 percent below the national average.

Representative Rodney Moore, a Democrat representing District 99 in Charlotte, says lawmakers need to invest in students today to prepare for tomorrow's job market.

“We need more technology, more 21^st century teaching modules and practices, because our economy is depending more heavily on those STEM disciplines that we always hear about. We have to recalibrate our public education system to accommodate our students in those disciplines,” says Moore.

Last year, Gov. Pat McCrory previewed his education proposals, including teacher pay raises at the event.  The state General Assembly will convene on Wednesday.
