A decision has been made: Cherry and Marshall streets will be the main interchange for Business 40 in downtown Winston-Salem when road improvements are finished. Work is scheduled to start in 2016.
The N.C. Department of Transportation announced the decision Monday.
An alternative outcome would have focused on interchanges at Liberty and Main streets, which will now have only partial access to Business 40 when the work is finished. Broad Street and Spruce Street will have no access to Business 40.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports the state looked at the right-of-way impact of each alternative, public input and the cost of each project.
DOT engineer Pat Ivey says the Cherry-Marshall option would save the state $6 million with a total cost of $84 million.
Ivey says that in addition to positive public feedback, the Cherry-Marshall alternative also has the support of the Winston-Salem City Council.
The goal is to improve traffic flow downtown. The city is also soliciting ideas on how to make the Business 40 corridor more attractive.
