Meet the Artist: Jay Jones - Owner, Designer, Builder of JF Jones Mobiles

Triad-based artist Jay Jones began his career 30 years ago in New York as a scenic builder for Pee Wee's Playhouse, SNL, dancer Trisha Brown, and artist Robert Rauschenberg just to name a few.

In 1995 he moved his woodworking company to Greensboro, and after 12 years engineering and inspecting for City of Greensboro, Jay started JF Jones Mobiles. His handcrafted copper mobiles range from 1 to 8 feet tall with delicately shaped and polished leaves of dogwood, ginko, maple, and oak, and his mobile kits can be assembled by anyone in an infinite variety of ways. 

Jay's copper mobiles are carried in more than 150 galleries, shops and museums including MoMA, The Smithsonian, Guggenheim and the National Gallery. You'll find Jay's mobile kits at Scuppernong Books, and Toy's and Co. in Greensboro. 

The owner, designer, and builder says it all began in 2008 following his family's Thanksgiving holiday trip to Washington D.C., and a fateful trip to the National Gallery of Art where he chanced upon a 35-foot wide metal mobile floating gently in the rotunda by legendary maker Alexander Calder.
