Artist's Studio, Piedmont Plein Air Paintout, Winston-Salem Symphony, and Greensboro Opera

Today on the show we'll be your one-stop culture shop. We have award-winning filmmakers, multi-media artists, choreographers, dancers, curators, students and audience members all making art together in real time. And that, ladies and gentlemen is just segment one on TAW. Then we're off to the great outdoors and a popular 19^th century tradition that's being embraced today in High Point en plein air. That's the French expression for "in the open air" and specifically outdoor painting. High Point's Piedmont Plein Air Paintout is coming to town and we'll check it out with an artist's keen eye. Then, the keen ears of W-S Symphony conductor Robert Moody will guide us through the orchestra's season opener. We'll wrap things up on the red carpet walk to Aycock Auditorium. That's where Greensboro Opera Conductor David Holley and internationally renowned Dixie Diva mezzo soprano Victoria Livengood will be struttin' their stuff at GO—as in Greensboro Opera—to the Movies. It's an entire evening of opera hits used in the movies and you're invited.

Artist's Studio

We begin with a collaborative program series between the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) and the University of NC School of the Arts. It's called Artist's Studio and the goal is to spark dialogue and enhance our understanding around contemporary art. Artist's Studio: Neil Goldberg is a 4-day workshop with the NY-based visual artist and UNCSA students and faculty culminating with a live public presentation at SECCA this weekend.

It'll be an immersive experience for the artists and the audience with non-traditional public talks, performances, film screenings, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creative process. David Ford will be on board moderating what's sure to be a fascinating dialogue between students, artists, and audience members. He can't think of a finer way to get right to the process behind art-making.

David Ford spoke with NY-based artist Neil Goldberg. Prior to Neil we heard from University of NC School of the Arts' Provost David Nelson, Editing and Sound faculty Julian Semilian and Dean of Dance Susan Jaffe, and Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art Executive Director Mark Leach. Artist's Studio: Neil Goldberg the live public presentation is Sunday, September 21^st at 2:00 pm in SECCA's McChesney Scott Dunn auditorium. In the meantime, the fascinating Neil Goldberg: Anthology exhibition is currently on view at SECCA through October 1^st.

Piedmont Plein Air Paintout

Lenoir, NC native Julie Delgaudio grew up with a passion for art that led her to studies and a career in interior design, hosting home show art exhibitions, and opening two at galleries of her own. Long before opening J. Gallery, Julie says she dreamt of one day organizing a plein air event, and this week, a year and a half of planning comes to fruition with Piedmont Plein Air Paintout. This weekend High Point is home to more than 30 nationally known artists painting the city and surrounding Piedmont landscape in the open air. The public is encouraged to interact with the artists as they paint on location. Julie is joined by artist Harold Frontz.

This year's Paintout selection juror is High Point University Associate Professor of Art Scott M. Raynor, and the competition will be juried by acclaimed Asheville plein air painter Richard Oversmith. On Thursday, more than 30 artists participated in a quick paint event along Main Street from Parkway Avenue to Farriss Avenue in High Point.  The four day plein air event—the largest in North Carolina—continues all weekend long rain or shine with artists stationed all over town. The event will culminate on Sunday with a grand public festival exhibit, and auction of the paintings created. There'll be live music, food trucks and more. Proceeds benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point.

Robert Moody and the Winston-Salem Symphony

It's opening weekend for the Winston-Salem Symphony under the baton of Robert Moody. He's celebrating his tenth anniversary leading the orchestra with music by Sergei Prokofiev, Arturo Marquez, and Sergei Rachmaninoff, his Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini. Joining the orchestra will be 20 year old piano sensation Conrad Tao. His playing has been hailed by the New York Times for its “probing intellect and open-hearted vision”. Bob Moody, who first collaborated with him when Conrad was a young teenager, couldn't agree more. He stopped by recently to talk about the concert.

This weekend he'll lead the orchestra's season-opening performances Saturday night September 20^th at 7:30, Sunday at 3:00 and Tuesday at 7:30. Tickets start at 20 bucks.

Greensboro Opera

Moonstruck, Life is Beautiful, Bad News Bears…what do these movies all have in common? Well, in a word: opera. La Boheme, Tales of Hoffman and Carmen respectively to be more precise and all of these famous arias and more will be performed by some of the world's greatest singers this Saturday night, September 20^th during GO—as in Greensboro Opera—to the Movies. Join Greensboro Opera and Metropolitan Opera star Victoria Livengood and hear tunes from Carmen, Samson and Dalilah, Il Trovatore and more. You too can be a diva for the day! Dress as your favorite movie star and kick the evening off at 6:30 with a stroll down the red carpet all the way to Aycock auditorium fully equipped with fawning paparazzi and lots of photo ops. You'll also want to bring along your smartphones to be part of this unique and interactive movie-opera experience! Whodah thunk you'd ever be asked to TURN ON your cell phones for a show!

GO—as in Greensboro Opera—to the Movies is Saturday night, September 20^th beginning with the red carpet treatment at 6:30 in Aycock Auditorium in Greensboro. Dress up as your favorite movie star and fight off the paparazzi, and premium ticket holders can hang out with the artists during the after party event.
