Trying to fathom the costs to patients when it comes to health can feel like a losing battle. There is no upfront pricing. Charges vary with who is paying. And transparency is virtually nonexistent.

Owen Covington, a reporter with the Triad Business Journal, wandered into the minefield in search of some clarity when it comes to health care costs in the Triad. He explains how the Triad stacks up compared to the national average.

“Though insight into true health care costs is muddy, a look at different factors reveals the region to be among the lower-cost areas in a state already known for low health care costs," says Covington. “The Triad may have lower costs of care, but that doesn't necessarily mean that its medical providers take home a smaller paycheck.”

He says data about what private insurers pay hospitals for some of the most common procedures  is being collected by the state of North Carolina, and should be available later this year, but has not yet been publicly released.
