High Point voters are facing a pivotal election. There's an open mayor's seat. Former mayor, Bernita Sims, resigned in September just before pleading guilty to a felony worthless check charge.

Voters will also pick from a crowded council field, with 8 candidates vying for 2 at-large seats. In all, 24 people are running for office in High Point this year. Paul Johnson has covered the city since 1997 as a reporter with the High Point Enterprise. He talked about what's at stake in this year's local election, including the campaign for the mayor's seat.

Johnson says the mayor's race involves two well-known local politicians - a Republican whose father once served as mayor, and a two-term state representative - as well as a newcomer to local politics.

It's the first race in years where all city seats are being contested, and spending on local races are at an all-time high. Johnson says voters have been given a stark contrast between candidates who favor change and those who stress continuity.

Also a couple of familiar faces are leaving the city government.
