The sale of a concrete plant in the middle of an urban corridor in Greensboro is clearing the way for the completion of a major economic development project that city leaders have been working on for years.
Chandler Concrete, which is on Mill Street, is in a heavy industrial site that is sandwiched between two big retail corridors: Battleground Avenue and Westover Terrace. The company has been making concrete since 1946, but retail has been cropping up along those two corridors. The sale of the plant is a big deal because of a railroad line the company uses on the Western side of downtown. Now that the owners are closing and relocating Chandler, this rail line is going to become available.
Catherine Carlock, a reporter with the Triad Business Journal, has been following the story, and she writes about the latest developments in her cover story in this week's newspaper.
“The company has signed an agreement that says they will no longer use the railroad and no one else that uses the site in the future will be able to use the railroad, so that actually means it is the last piece in the puzzle that will allow two big greenway projects in Greensboro to move forward," says Carlock.
