Employees at University of North Carolina Greensboro say they're concerned, outraged, and fearful in the wake of the firing and arrests of three longtime university staffers. A letter written by former employees accuses UNCG of mismanagement and ongoing harassment.
UNCG fired the three employees of the University Relations Department on Friday after a three week investigation. The News and Record of Greensboro reports that photographers Chris English and David Wilson, along with their boss, Lyda Carpen, had a combined 39 years of service at the university.
According to dismissal letters released by UNCG, English and Wilson used state-owned cameras and computers for their freelance photography business since at least 2010 and took some photos during normal work hours, among other accusations. Carpen is accused of doing some work for the photography business, signing incorrect timecards and failing to tell UNCG about the company operating on state property.
All three are being charged with several counts of obtaining property by false pretenses or aiding or abetting in that process, Class H felony charges, which could result in prison sentences.
The firings and arrests have sparked outrage among some past and present UNCG employees.
Representatives of the Faculty and Staff Senates planned to meet privately with Chancellor Linda Brady Thursday.
