The city of Winston-Salem is receiving special recognition for the revitalization of one of its downtown streets.

Fourth Street has been named a “Great Main Street” by the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association. The organization says Fourth Street won the honor because of its "history, mixed uses and the vibrancy of the main downtown street in the city."

The Association presented the award to mayor Allen Joines during the Second Sunday on Fourth activities. The award is part of the chapter's Great Places in North Carolina program, created in 2012 to highlight North Carolina's great places, communities, and people that have created them.

Joines says the Fourth Street project is indicative of the overall turnaround downtown Winston-Salem. “It certainly validates all of the hard work that so many people have done over the past 20 years in rebuilding Fourth Street. The city put in the infrastructure, but I think the real credit goes to the entrepreneurs, the restaurants, the retail shops that make the downtown such a special place.”

Joines says the city will install banners on Fourth Street that say it has been named by the American Planning Association as one of the great main streets in North Carolina.

Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte and Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh have been given a Great Main Street designation in previous years.
