The Forsyth Board of Elections denied a request Monday to move an early voting site at Winston-Salem's South Fork Recreation Center. The news comes after senior citizens and local leaders objected to the site, which is used for an annual craft fair in the fall.
Members of the craft organization say they will likely cancel the Holly Jolly Craft Fair, which could mean a loss of $21 thousand. They wanted the city to instead use an alternate site which was proposed and agreed on by the board of elections in July.
The Winston Salem Journal reports seven people asked the board to choose another site instead of South Fork during the public comment period. But board secretary Stuart Russell was firm in his position that the board should stick to its first-choice sites. City council member Dan Besse, a Democrat, said afterwards that this was a partisan abuse of power by the board majority.
