The Paper Boy is a compilation of stories set in the early 1940s in the town of Bodenheimer. Author Elmer L. Allen Jr., who goes by Sonny, will readily admit that Bodenheimer is based on Clemmons, North Carolina. As a Winston-Salem native, one who grew up in Clemmons, and a former mayor of Salisbury, Allen is well-familiar with the area.
From the hub that is Wellman's general store and service station, to Royal Ambassadors meetings at the local church, to stories heard and shared along the paper route, Allen weaves together a national tale of war and local stories of bootlegging, gossip, love, and more.
Sonny stopped by WFDD to tell Bethany Chafin more, and she began by asking Sonny about the World War II setting for his book.
On August 20th, Allen will be participating in a Senior Authors Symposium at the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center in Salisbury. He and other writers will be discussing the writing and publishing process.
