A student was found with a firearm and live ammunition at Carver High School in Winston-Salem on Monday, according to a media release from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The student was located and searched after an anonymous tip was made to the School Resource Officer. Officials say the handgun was never displayed, and no one at the school was hurt or threatened.

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking a secure custody order, meaning the detention of the juvenile suspect for Possession of a Weapon on Educational Property.

In a media release, Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough called for metal detectors to be placed in all schools.

"I understand the cost, however I can’t help wondering what price we will pay for not having them," he said.

Currently, the district employs these devices at random, though it plans to increase the frequency this year. They were not used at Carver today, according to a district spokesperson.

Students will likely see more officers around campus in the coming days.
