Student hurt after gun fired on Winston-Salem State University campus, school says

The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) announced Thursday that an arrest has been made following an incident of gun fire on Winston-Salem State University’s campus. 

Law enforcement officials say Damarion Lesean Hall, 18, was charged with possession of a weapon on educational property after officers located a weapon in a vehicle associated with the individuals involved in the incident.

According to a press release from the WSPD, officers have not charged any suspects for the shooting on campus, and have not determined what led to the incident “due to uncooperative witnesses.”

Officials say the investigation is ongoing.

The Winston-Salem State University campus was on lockdown after a gun was fired and a student was hurt on Wednesday night, according to a university spokesperson.

The student is in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

WSSU says the lockdown has been lifted and this incident is not an active shooter situation.

“We know that it was a gun, but … we do not have information of whether there was an actual shooting or whether the weapon was just discharged from some other method,” Chief Marketing and Strategic Communications Officer with WSSU Haley Gingles said during a news conference on Wednesday night.

The gun was fired in the Covington Residence Hall and involved a current student.

Classes will happen on schedule on Thursday. Counselors will be available on campus for students.
