Following the mass resignation of Summerfield's staff, the town council voted this week to give Town Manager Scott Whitaker a severance package.
Staffers cited Whitaker's alleged mistreatment as the driving reason behind their decision to leave. The town council in February opted not to renew his contract and didn't offer him severance at the time.
On Monday, the council voted to award Whitaker six months of severance pay and continued insurance benefits at an estimated cost of $105,000.
In a statement, Councilmember Heath Clay called the staff departures "sad" and said the town believes it's treated Whitaker "in a fair manner."
Summerfield Finance Officer Dee Hall says the move hasn't changed staff's resignation plans, saying via email "we are at complete peace with our decision."
Whitaker's last day with the town is June 10.
