Officials are saying that as many as six Americans were killed in the latest attack on NATO troops near Bagram, Afghanistan. The number of American fatalities in Afghanistan has dropped in the past few years and this would be a significant number of deaths, if they are indeed U.S. troops.

Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner said in a statement, “We’re deeply saddened by this loss. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those affected in this tragic incident, especially during this holiday season.”

Here & Now’s Robin Young speaks with NPR national security editor Phil Ewing about the attack.
