A celebration for the 30th anniversary of the acclaimed documentary Hoop Dreams will take place at Wake Forest University on Wednesday.
The film follows the journeys of Arthur Agee and William Gates — two basketball players from inner-city Chicago — over the course of five years as they go from middle school all the way to college.
Agee and Gates will participate in a conversation about the making of the film and the significance of its reception with producer and cinematographer Peter Gilbert, who serves as professor and creative director of the documentary film program at Wake Forest.
“We just want to show that, even though it’s different today because of NIL and all those other kinds of things that have opened up, there’s still a lot of the same issues that are going on with these kids in terms of the family struggles, the family issues, and their own hopes, and their own dreams,” says Gilbert.
In 2007, the International Documentary Association named Hoop Dreams the best documentary of all time in a poll of its members.
