A Wake Forest University student is in stable condition after being shot early Saturday.

According to a statement from Wake Forest University, at approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 11, a motorist called Winston-Salem Police with reports of a person collapsed in the road at the intersection of Polo Road and Brookwood Drive, just east of University Parkway.

Winston-Salem Police responded quickly and brought in Wake Forest University Police to assist. Police found the student with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police currently believe the student was shot during a robbery, but the investigation is continuing.

Wake Forest President Nathan O. Hatch released a statement Saturday afternoon, saying the student is doing well after undergoing surgery.

"I want to offer my gratitude to the Winston-Salem Police Department and our own University Police for their quick response and their efforts in the ongoing investigation," Hatch says. "I am also grateful for the many members of the campus community currently working in support of this student and the family.  They appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers directed their way."

Wake Forest has not released the student's name, age or gender.

Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to call Winston Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700 or Crimestoppers at 336-727-2800. Both agencies are increasing patrols on campus and in the surrounding area.
