This week we present the latest episode from the 2016-2017 Pickathon Woods Series. These videos are hand-picked by opbmusic to showcase some of the most exciting performances captured at the Woods Stage during Pickathon, a three-day festival held each summer just outside Portland, Ore.
As the gloaming slowly engulfed the sky on the night of Saturday, Aug. 6, the growing festival crowd could tell they were witnessing something special. There among the twigs and trees of the Woods Stage, the Canadian group Alvvays gave one of the best performances of Pickathon 2016 with a set of fun and entirely danceable jangle-pop music.
"This is definitely the coolest place we've ever played," lead singer Molly Rankin cheerfully remarked to the audience nestled in the forested amphitheater. And the band was clearly having fun as it performed this version of "Next Of Kin," from its self-titled 2014 debut. It was the perfect soundtrack for a cool Oregon summer evening and provided the exclamation point to this feel-good gig.
Every month through next summer, opbmusic and NPR Music will present another episode from the Pickathon Woods Stage. Look for the next premiere in late January.
