Watch Big Thief Collaborate On A New Song

There's a new song from one of the best new bands of 2016, Big Thief. The song was created in the studio in just a few days for the wonderful documentary series "Shaking Through." That series has given many artists the chance to create while letting viewers in on the creative process. These recordings are made with the help of Weathervane Music in Philadelphia, a non-profit group that encourages artists take chances and create. In this case, Weathervane invited Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic to produce something and he in turn invited Big Thief, a band he recently got to know while on tour, to come into the studio.

"Mother," the song they created, is about nurturing and the natural cycle of birth and decay. It begins simply, with Big Thief songwriter and singer Adrianne Lenker and her acoustic guitar, and then kicks into full throttle with some ambient organ leading to more electric sounds, then drums and electric guitars. It's the kind of dynamic this band, who showed us they are able to navigate intimacy and uproar on its debut record, Masterpiece, does well.
