This week we present the first episode from the 2016-2017 Pickathon Woods Series. These videos are hand-picked by opbmusic to showcase some of the most exciting performances captured at the Woods Stage during Pickathon, a three-day festival held each summer just outside Portland, Ore.
On the second day of the 2016 Pickathon festival, Hurray for the Riff Raff played to an appreciative crowd among the trees on Pendarvis Farm. Frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra led the folk-rock band in a memorable rendition of "The Body Electric." This already compelling anti-violence song, which appeared on the band's 2014 album Small Town Heroes, has taken on even more significance in the wake of a cross-country spate of high-profile shootings of people of color by police. This newfound relevance wasn't lost on Segarra, who dedicated the powerful performance "to the liberation of black and brown people in the United States of America."
Every month this year, opbmusic and NPR Music will present another episode from the Pickathon Woods Stage. Look for the next premiere in late November.
