The Winston-Salem Housing Authority joined city officials and residents Thursday to celebrate the opening of Brown School Lofts at Legacy Heights.
The 81-unit apartment complex was funded by a $30 million federal grant and is the first phase of an initiative to create more affordable homes. The mixed-income development replaces the former Cleveland Avenue Homes. Some residents from that complex have already moved in.
At a ribbon cutting, councilmember Annette Scippio shared her excitement for the families who will call the development home, and said it's critical it remains in good condition for years to come.
"It takes a village to raise children," she said. "It takes a village to keep our homes wonderful."
The complex is built where the former Robert Washington Brown Elementary School once stood.
The completed development is the first of a five-phase project that will bring 400 units of new housing to the city.
