Winston-Salem’s city council approved economic incentives Tuesday for two local companies eyeing expansion.

The council awarded Hispanic food distributor Purple Crow and kidney-disease-focused biotech company ProKidney packages collectively totaling $1 million. Both companies plan to use the money to fund expansions of their headquarters.

Purple Crow is set to relocate to a building in Whitaker Park, a move the company says would create 199 new jobs paying an average of $72,000 per year. ProKidney wants to expand its current site on Westpoint Boulevard by 53,000 square feet, creating about 50 jobs.

Laura Lee with Greater Winston-Salem cheered the decision, calling Purple Crow’s expansion “timely.”

“We also know that these types of jobs will be able to span all types of citizens throughout Winston-Salem. So we do know that these almost 200 jobs will really be substantial for our community. And we look forward to their growth here.”

Purple Crow is seeking additional funding from Forsyth County for its expansion. A county incentive package for ProKidney has already been approved.
