More eco-friendly transportation options are coming to the Triad.

The city of Greensboro has been awarded a $22.4 million federal grant allowing it to purchase six battery-electric buses, 12 hybrid-diesel buses and 26 chargers.

The buses will be added to the city’s existing fleet, while the hybrids will replace similar vehicles that have run their course.

Greensboro Transit Director Reginald Mason released a statement noting that the grant will help the city’s transition to a zero-emission fleet, as outlined in an overall Strategic Energy Plan released in 2022.

The city of Winston-Salem will receive $4.4 million to replace five transit buses with new hybrid-electric buses, allowing it to retire some older vehicles. There are currently 45 hybrid-electric vehicles in the Winston-Salem Transit Authority Fleet.

All of the funding comes from Federal Transit Administration grants being funneled to 47 states.
