Winston-Salem police are considering new safety measures in the wake of a shooting near the fairgrounds during the opening weekend of the Carolina Classic Fair.
Police Chief William Penn, Jr. said in a statement the increasing number of "unruly teenagers and adults" has made it challenging for law enforcement to focus on public safety.
He said police have provided security for the fair for decades, but have not seen this much fighting and disruption at the event.
On Sunday, officers responded to the area of West 27th Street on a report of a shooting. One victim was found with a gunshot wound to the leg. While officers were investigating this incident another juvenile victim arrived at the hospital from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Officials said both injuries are non-life-threatening.
Penn said he encourages parents to supervise their kids at the fair, and for adults to model "appropriate behavior."
The Carolina Classic Fair is expected to run through Oct. 13.
