Starting May 1, drivers in downtown Winston-Salem will no longer need quarters to pay for parking. The city is replacing its aging meters with a Pay-by-Phone app system.

Winston-Salem Director of Transportation Jeff Fansler says an outreach campaign will help guide residents through the transition. And there will be a grace period before ticketing begins.

“So we're not going to be just enforcing, you know, those right off the bat, soon as you roll this out," he told the city council on Monday. "We do feel like there's a benefit to educating our community on the new program."

Crews will remove the meters in the coming weeks. New signage and instructions for downloading the app will be installed in their place.
