Yadkin County is piloting a program to address a shortage of child care options in rural areas.

The EarlyEd FlexPlex model was originally conceived by a child care firm in Minnesota. It was picked up by Yadkin County community leaders when they saw its potential to offer a solution that fit the unique needs of area families, many of whom aren’t on traditional schedules.

The program puts six child care providers under one roof with managerial support. Each of them will become licensed, small business owners and receive subsidies from state and local employers to help parents pay for child care.

Carolyn Choplin is the executive director of Smart Start of Yadkin County. She says officials from other rural counties have contacted her about the program as they look for solutions to similar issues.

"We’re willing to share with everybody our journey as we develop," she says. " It will make it easier for other people to be able to do the same thing."

She says the organization is seeking $2 million for construction.
