Bassett was nominated in 1993 for her portrayal as singer Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It, and in 2022 for Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
McDaniel, the first Black person to win an Academy Award, donated her Oscar to Howard University before her death. But the plaque mysteriously went missing, likely sometime around the 1960s or 1970s.
The short documentary is called Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're A Girl. "This movie is my love letter to the brave girls of that country," says director Carol Dysinger.
