How a whiskey-fueled meeting in 1949 led to Berlin's famed techno scene

All-night clubs in the German capital have long drawn "techno tourists." That might never have happened had a hotelier failed to negotiate the end of the city's curfew following World War II.

While Berlin clubs have been closed since last March, people lined up outside the city's famed KitKat Club last weekend, participating in the government's Clubculture Reboot project. They were required to receive a negative PCR test to go inside.

Indoor dancing in the German capital's world-renowned club scene has been shut down since early 2020. As an experiment, six clubs opened to patrons who had tested negative for the coronavirus.
